If you wish to post notice of positions located outside the Florida area, please contact: Geri Golonka Safety Specialist (4/3/08)Employer: Sysco Food Services of Southeast Florida, LLC Manage and champion all aspects of Company-wide safety programs to achieve company goals; focus on improving and promoting safety through training, observation, administering and enforcing written policies and procedures to improve overall associate health and well-being as “associates are our greatest asset.” This position will be scheduled to rotate weekly shifts to cover all functions of operations (Day & Night Warehouse and Transportation) and possible weekends. Essential Functions: 1. Monitor and achieve Company safety goals to decrease overall accident and injury frequency and related costs. Develop controls for identified deficiencies. 2. Enforce safety policies and encourage continual improvement in workplace safety and wellness. 3. Assess the effectiveness of management programs, policies, procedures and loss control guidelines to reduce losses. Motivate associate involvement, awareness, participation, ownership and compliance to reduce losses and lower expenses. 4. Work with each department to assure a safe, clean work environment with an emphasis on each of their areas. 5. Keep abreast of all laws and regulations to insure SYSCO’s compliance including, OSHA, DOT, EPA and FDA. 6. Provide technical knowledge and expertise to Transportation associates. 7. Assist with administering environmental, health, and safety programs and related policies and procedures affecting the company’s existing and/or proposed environmental health and safety issues. 8. Maintains safety files and records. 9. Monitor and follow-up with information extracted from the Safety Hotline. 10. Conduct, direct and coordinate the training of all associates in OSHA regulatory training. Provide customized training for management team on timely issues, safety regulations and/or loss producing problems. 11. Keep safety communication process to associates fresh and educational. 12. Monitor and assist with Disaster Plan. 13. Conduct facility/on-road safety inspections and audits. 14. Coordinate and/or perform Job Hazard Assessments and recommend measures to control exposures, including substitution of less hazardous materials/equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), changes in work practices and engineering controls. 15. Ensure MSDS sheets are available on all chemicals and hazardous materials internally used and externally sold by the Company by updating quarterly. 16. Assist in the biannual update of the SEPP manual. 17. Improve and assist in the continued development of the SYSCO Safe Program, including work methods, Coach Cards, observations, audits and hazard assessments. 18. Trained to conduct internal DOT and non-DOT drug testing. Responsible for coordinating DOT random testing. 19. Prepare and distribute the weekly safety report. 20. Submit Claims to third party carrier. Monitor and assess each claim to include: investigation of accident (identifying root cause), follow-up communication with claimant and management team. 21. Conduct the Accident Review Board as necessary and disseminate timely results. Participate in Executive staff safety steering committee. 22. Facilitate associate safety committee. 23. Certified trainer for defensive driving – ensure compliance with company requirements. 24. Assist in developing and implementing programs; train to create associate awareness, reduce losses, and lower Company Worker’s Compensation and automobile liability costs. 25. Serve as essential personnel in time of catastrophe events (hurricane, facility evacuations, etc.) 26. Perform other duties as directed by Supervisor. Qualifications and Skills: Must be organized and detail-oriented. Must have the ability to effectively utilize computer programs such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. Must have the ability to:
Expertise in proactively and creatively driving down risk. Must maintain a valid Florida driver license, a good driving record, and adequate personal automobile insurance per Company requirements. Class A license is a plus. Education and Experience: A two or four year college degree (preferably in Safety or Loss Prevention) is a plus. Previous safety and DOT experience is required. An in depth working knowledge of OSHA and DOT regulations and other regulatory compliance is strongly preferred. Prior experience and knowledge of safety in a warehouse and/or transportation setting strongly preferred. Language Skills: This position requires the ability to read written instructions, reports, and other documentation. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Ability to effectively communicate to associates at all levels. Mathematical Skills: An individual must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to calculate the impact of safety related costs to the bottom line of the business (frequency, costs, etc.). Reasoning Ability: Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in both oral and written form. Ability to communicate concerns clearly and concisely to management. Physical Demands and Work Environment: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, an associate is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; reach with hands or arms; talk and hear. The associate may be exposed to various types of settings which may include extreme heat or cold as in outdoor environments, cooler and freezer warehouse environments, and adverse weather. While in the warehouse, an individual in this position will be exposed to moving machinery and equipment, dust, fumes, chemicals, and high noise levels. Work is required throughout the Company in various settings to include the office, warehouse, vehicles, on the road, etc. This position is also exposed to moving mechanical apparatus with vibration and moderate to high noise levels. The work environment includes congested and high traffic areas, working alongside forklifts, double/triple pallet jacks, single pallet jacks, tuggers, and wagons/carts. Walking and working is done on concrete flooring. Must be able to bend, stoop, and some occasional moderate lifting (could range up to 100 lbs.) may be required. The vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
